Historically, stress has helped humans to cope with moments of crisis since millenia. It is an response to danger in any form. In the face of a perceived threat, the nervous system floods the body with stress hormones, and initiates an event known as the “fight-or-flight response”. This happens to support us in navigating the challenge at hand. This system serves us beautifully, as long as there is a period of rest and recovery following the event.
The realities of modern lives, unfortunately, do not allow for too many periods of rests and recovery, as we are constantly exposed to various stressors, ranging from information overload to navigating hectic daily lifes accompanied by challenging interpersonal dynamics, power struggles in private and professional life, deadlines, long hours, commitments, commutes, and the list goes on.
In short, it is the pace and the demands of our hectic, modern life that “stress us out.”
It is important to understand that if we are continuously exposed to stressors the “fight-or-flight response” will stay turned on. The long-term activation of the stress response system can disrupt almost all the body’s processes, increasing the risk for many health problems.
One of the most important first steps in balancing stress is to slow down. However, when we’re accustomed to a fast-paced, busy life, slowing down can feel challenging and often quite impossible.
We are all tensed up because we are not allowing our bodies to breathe deeply. Stress manifests in tension which is a tightening. To loosen up we need several kinds of rest: physical, mental, sensory, social, emotional, creative, spiritual.
At such times an Ayurveda treatment can help starting the journey of slowing down. Many illnesses result from the build-up of toxins through various seasons in our life, which can impair the body’s natural defenses through the lymph, circulatory and immune systems. Ayurveda promotes healing and restoration by eliminating these toxins from the body.
To support different people from different walks of life in starting their journey towards a more balanced life, we have set-up a small, a little atypical, Ayurvedic treatment center in a small fishermen village on the southern shores of Sri Lanka. Nestled within the tropical village surrounding, our tropical holiday homes offer complete comfort and tranquility as your home away from home. Here you can relax and maintain a deep sense of wellbeing. Rise above the stress, the noise, the pressure, and simply enjoy life by the beach. Take time to take care of yourself so that you can get back out there and thrive.
